![]() I cloned the drive in between just to be sure. I like to run just a few at a time and see how they work before adding another one. It came with 10.4.6, so I got the combo updater to 10.4.7 and loaded that, along with all the other QuickTime, iLife, and other updates. The full clone took about 30 minutes and each incremental "smart update" took less than 10 minutes. The cloning process and the reboot are still faster with FW, but it is nice to have the option to use USB if needed. ![]() For PPC-Macs, they can only boot from a FW drive, but I am pleased to say that SD clones to both USB and FW and the Intel-based Macs boot from either one. It makes an exact copy of every bit and byte on your internal HD to an external HD. You can decide if that it worth your time. It took about 50 minutes and I saved almost 6GB, leaving me with 64GB of free space. I left off Quicken, Garage Band and the sample loops, the extra languages, Office Test Drive, iWork demo and the games. Then I started the reinstall, choosing the "erase and install" option so that any bad sectors on the HD would be marked - if any. First, I cloned the HD to my FireWire drive using SuperDuper (it is a UB and works with both USB and FW). Since everyone seems to ask about doing a clean install on it, I went about it. The hard drive weighs in at just over 74GB and it had 16.75GB of stuff on it. I ran the Apple Hardware Test and of course it came back clean. BONG! It booted to the desktop in about 20 seconds - tops - and had no wierd sounds or stuck pixels. The possibility of less than perfect condition was the biggest thing that kept me from getting a refurb before. It is flawless in every way - and I am very particular about my stuff. As I unpacked it, I gave it a good look and this thing looks like it has never been touched by human hands. It came in the plain brown box withoout the fancy Apple packaging that we are all used to, but everthing was there and packed very well. The RAM gets here tomorrow, so I'll add that info then. I bought the computer and 2GB of RAM for less than the new stock configuration. As these forums are by their nature negative - they are support forums after all - I would like to take a moment to post my impressions of the refurbished BlackBook that I got off the Apple online store.įirst off, it was $200 off new.
